Drift Keeps Us Off Target:
Peter warns us that drift is real.
If we are not after the knowledge of Christ, then we might say this is drift. We may be reading the Bible and have the right aim, but we are off target if we are looking for something other than Jesus.
Peter makes this clear just before our main passage:
“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord… through the knowledge of Him who called us.” (2 Peter 1:2–3)
The focus is not side topics, hot topics, or how Scripture can help us get ahead. The focus is the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus taught this same truth in John 15. We are to be planted, rooted, and grounded in Christ—not wispy, not untethered. A Christian who floats, like a leaf blown by the wind, is easily distracted, lured away, tempted, fallen, or may not even know Him at all.
Peter speaks again about this danger of drift:
“For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning.” (2 Peter 2:20)
If the knowledge of Christ does not spur us on to strive against drift, we become barren and fruitless.
Drift causes us to forget Him.
Drift causes us to forget we are to be adding to our faith—building character that bears fruit.
Peter says diligence is how we make our calling and election sure. A lack of growth may reveal that we are merely in the arena of faith—around believers, but not yet spiritually part of it—and in danger of drifting toward destruction.
Salvation is by grace through faith—it is the gift of God. But do you see evidence of God’s power at work in you? These faith-to-love actions are not payment into the kingdom; they are evidence of trust.
If these things are yours, you will not stumble.
If they are not—you are floating. Drifting. In danger.
Something Fun:
I was invited to a friend’s birthday painting party

A few months back, I attended one of these for my sister in laws birthday and I really enjoyed it. My mom, my grammy, and other family members have the knack for painting. I never really tried it before. I think I like it. Not too shabby.

Thanks for listening,
