Day 22: He is for Us

In Matthew chapter 9, Jesus the healer, and savior of the world enters time and space. To Him, it doesn’t matter if you are young or old, black or white, rich or poor. He is about restoring life and healing what has held you in bondage. I love that in this section of scripture that it didn’t matter whether you straight up asked for healing like the ruler did concerning his daughter who just died or if you slipped in through the crowd, unnoticed and in silence, to receive healing just from touching the hem of His garment. No matter if we are bold and extroverted like Jarius the ruler or quiet introverts like the women with the issue of blood. Jesus wants to make us whole. He sees us and we are never overlooked. He is for us.

While he was saying these things to them, behold, a ruler came in and knelt before him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” And Jesus rose and followed him, with his disciples. And behold, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.

Matthew 9:18-22

In this world, where everyone is clamoring to be seen…being a person who sees people is rare. That is what Jesus has called us to do. To see the unseen. To champion and give honor to the least among us. We barely look up from our phones to look eye to eye anymore. Instead, we settle for likes on our posts all the while looking for the world to tell us that they are for us. It’s a fickle satisfaction. Social media turns with the tide. There is always something new, more interesting, and exciting to look at. People are unattached in relationships, feel unloved and uncared for, while working for the attention that they crave. We live with a deep emptiness but with Jesus we are never overlooked. Not even dead girls! In these scriptures, Jesus walks into the situation, the people mock Him, and think He is crazy but Jesus simply enters the house takes the girl by the hand and she gets up. When everything in our life feels dead, Jesus takes us by the hand and we rise every time! – Tweet That!

PRAYER: Jesus, help me to see people. How can I become a person who sees people like you do? Help me to put my phone down, to get out of my own head, and connect with the hearts I encounter today.
