SO GOOD — #tellsomebody
Sometimes you find a gem:
Something absolutely heart warming:
Try Something revealing:
Have you ever just sat with your thoughts? Sitting in silence, listening to what’s going on in there. It makes most people uncomfortable. But that only felt until it is practiced and you develop the ability to do it.
I remember many, many years ago when I started at a simple 30 seconds. I thought it was so hard. Over the years I have returned to the silence as a practice, often in the fall. A quiet, slow down, for my soul as the earth is also entering into its quiet, slow down for winter. I made it to 20 mins of sitting in silence.
But here is why? Most of us have absolutely no control over what we are thinking. We also do not have the ability to think before we speak. Or pause our minds when we are hearing something difficult. Most of the time, reaction is the name of the game. But that is not what the Lord has in mind for us. The mind just runs and rambles all day long. Untethered and at random. But scripture tells us to do something specific with our minds.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Philippians 4:8
We are told to think on these things. But first let’s see where we are: I recently tried a test. It is simple I thought you would want to try it also.
TEST: When you are done reading these bolded words, I want you to close your eyes and listen. What is the next thing you think? Don’t force it. Don’t try to think anything. Just observe the next few thoughts.
What did they say? We can do this regularly and know very quickly if you are in a good place, negative space, or something else. Based on what you heard perhaps you will want to start doing 30 seconds of silence and work your way up to 1,3, or 5 mins. Doing this helps us to learn to hear our thoughts and when we can do that, we can catch them and turn them. We can begin to tell our minds what to think. We can choose what we will think about. Putting in the good stuff, so that when the silence comes – we hear the good because we’ve trained our ears to hear it.
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,
2 Corinthians 10:3-5
