Day 35 – He is the Remedy.
When all the other gospels jump from Peter’s denial of Jesus to the betrayal in the garden of Gethsemane. John, the one who refers to himself as the one who Jesus loves, takes the time to write down all the things that Jesus said before they went to the garden. Jesus is deeply concerned for His disciples. He knows what is about to happen and they don’t get it even though He keeps saying the plain truth that He was going to be taken and lifted up. The human mind and heart without the Holy Spirit really are deaf, dumb, and blind. He had previously told them that one of them was a traitor. They were fixated thinking and speaking among themselves, “who’s the traitor? Am I the traitor?” In a section of John, chapter 14, called “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life’ Jesus desires to encourage them to not let their hearts be troubled but rather to believe.
John 14:1 and 6 Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me… Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Have you ever been in a situation in life where you hear the truth but your insides freak out and lose it? I have! I imagine that this is how these disciples are feeling in this little section of scripture. Jesus tells them that one of them is a betrayer and they all start wondering if it is them. Fear grips their hearts and holds on. Fear speaks doubt and confusion erupts. They must have been thinking, “Could I betray Him? Is it me? Would I do that? Why? I love Him. I am a sinner. What if I did? Oh no, no, no, God help me?” Can you hear the panic, the fear, it’s overwhelming. Jesus comforts them, “let not your hearts be troubled.” Jesus is the answer. He is the remedy. He speaks again, “believe in God; believe also in me.” Jesus comforts troubled hearts because He knows the Way to overcome fear is in Him. He is the Truth that lifts the shade of darkness so that Life can begin! – Tweet That!
PRAYER: Jesus, sometimes when you reveal the truth to me I recoil, flounder, and freak out a bit. I tend to forget who You are in that moment and get wrapped up in myself. Thank you that you make a way for me through everything. Please continue to speak the truth to me so that life will be in me and through all I do.
Have you noticed that when the truth is spoken to you about your attitude, your way of being, your stinking thinking that you tend to get defensive? All truth belongs to God so it really doesnt matter who is speaking it. Does having the truth revealed in your life cause you to fear? Are you afraid of others knowing who you really are? Of looking bad in others eyes? Jesus is the revealer of hearts so that we can willingly expose our heart to the light and let life bloom on the inside. Don’t shrink away. Stand in the light! He is right there to comfort your troubled heart and encourage you to believe!
